Leaving party: Club to sell founding gig

MEMBERS of Hayle Pilot Gig Club gathered to say goodbye to the boat they originally founded the club with.

After more than 20 years the gig – Isis – is being sold to raise funds for a new and faster racing boat.

Hayle Pilot Gig Club say farewell to their gig Isis after 21 years.

A mix-up led to Hayle Copperhouse Pool being drained on Sunday morning, which scuppered the club's plans to have a rowing session with past and present members as a farewell to the boat.

Rupert Eveleigh, club captain, said that even though the day did not go to plan, it was important to mark the occasion.

He said: "It (Isis) was the club's first gig, bought in 1991. It's our founding boat and a lot of people have had a lot of fun in it. You definitely get attached, especially that boat, it was really well built."

Isis, had its most notable success at the World Pilot Gig Championships several years ago when it took the men's team to second place.

Sunday afternoon was instead spent cleaning up the boat, ready for it to be sent away to its new club.
